Printing

Spooler file too small, add an NTFS drive, to configure the print server to use the alternate spool file ?Ctrl-Panel, Printer, Server properties, advanced tab (check). The other way to change spool directory is to change the registry Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\DefaultSpoolDirectory ?default directory is \winnt\system32\spool\printers
Redirect print jobs on failed network printer to another network printer ?add a local port to the faulty printer and typr the UNC name of another printer in the Port Name dialog box.

Dual language HP printer switch between PCL and PostScript printing ?to switch mode correctly ?use separator file.

To get NT provide support for HP printer device, you must install the DLC (Data Link Control) protocol to create a network-attached port.

Update printer drivers ?only in print server, no need on clients.

Two dept. share the same printer, to make the printer print A’s doc faster than B ?create a separate logical printer, assign right to A, set printer priority to 99 (highest=99, lowest=1)
Printer pool includes printer A and B, if A get paper jam, print job will wait till A fix, will not route to B.

Suspect spooler problem cause not printing ?stop/start spooler service.
If you have clients running previous versions of NT, you will need to install appropriate driver for each version, you also need to install a separate driver for win95. (AT43 – check)
If printer is setup to run during off-hour, and print jobs been sent during hour ?will be stored in the spooler.

Implement a printer pool for 6 different printers ?the printer devices must use the same print driver. No need to be the same model, or attached to the same printer server, or use the same printer port

User Profile & Logon Script

Create Roaming Profile - specify UNC path in User Manager for Domains User Profile box. To copy profile from one location to another ?Ctrl-Panel, system, Profile tab.
You can’t specify the UNC name for logon script, to allow BDC get logon script in PDC, use directory replicator service to copy logon script from PDC to BDC.

To change user profile to roaming profile ?copy user profile to network share path using "copy profile to" box, change profile to roaming. Then type the network path in user profile path box for each user account.
After create user profiles on PDC, specify the full UNC path name of each user’s home directory and a shared network drive letter on the User Environment Profile screen in User Manger for Domains.

Logon script is in \winnt\system32\repl\export\scripts folder

PerfMon:

Chart and report is monitoring in real-time. Log is good option in monitoring 48 hours. Report is good at monitoring a lot of objects.
Memory Pages/Second ?Monitor RAM needed
Processor: % process time ?Find out the percentage of elapsed time that a processor is busy ?find out how busy the processor is. If over 80% ?need newer/more processors.
System object processor queue length: if % processor time is close to100% and this counter is greater than2 ?need faster processors.
Processor: Interrupts/Second ?level of hardware interrupts.
Pages/sec and avg. Disk Sec/transfer ?determine if excessive paging is occurring. ?The product of both equal to the percentage of disk access time being devoted to paging, if > 10% then paging problem exist.
Usage peak (bytes) and %usage ? determine if the paging file size is approaching its maximum (AT23)
Performance monitor alerts for 5 servers ?create 5 alerts on a workstation, not each of the servers. (AT40)
In order to use % Network utilization counter ?install network monitor agent (BT37)
PerfMon alert can not be sent to 2 users who belongs to 2 different groups.
Average disk queue length ?check if RAID device has causing system bottlenecks.

RAS and authentication

RAS, support both MS and non-MS clients (etc. Unix RAS clients), to achieve highest level of encryption ?allow any authentication including clear test. Non-MS clients able to send RAS password through the CHAP authentication protocol. To achieve highest level of encryption ?req. Encrypted authentication. If ony MS clients ?req. MS encrypted authentication.
RAS clients can use SLIP and PPP to dial-in to RAS server, but NT RAS server only accept incoming PPP connections (up to 256).

RAS supports TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and NWLink. But AutoDial only supports TCP/IP, NetBEUI, but not NWLink.
NetBIOS gateway on server sustains standard NT network operation for PPP attached clients.
PPP RAS support Name Pipes, ICP, logon authentication, printer share access, and Winsock API apps (choose all).

Suspect RAS modem causing RAS connection problems ?enable device.log file from within Registry, the file’s default location is \winnt\system32\ras ?to create and enable device.log, set value to 1 under \Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\Parameters.
RAS autodial is enabled by default.
RAS dial out support TCP/IP, NetBEUI, or NWLink.
Troubleshooting RAS ?event viewer; device.log, and modemlog.txt.
RAS call back has 3 options -
No call back - this is default setting, no call back allows.
Set by caller - prompt the user for a call back number. If RAS call back is policy, but one user don't need call back ?enable callback security with set by caller selected.

The fastest lookup time will occur when the HOST and LMHOSTS files are stored on the local HD of each RAS client.
Most security encrypted authorization method for RAS is: MS-CHAP, also called RSA MD4. Better than CHAP.
Most probable reason that RAS client can’t access RAS server that both running TCP/IP is SLIP (or PPP) setting on client not configured.

Fault Tolerance

Disk mirroring and disk duplexing can be in boot and system partition, disk striping and volume set can not.
To repair mirror set ?replace failed disk, break and recreate mirror set.
To repair stripe set with parity ? replace failed disk, select regenerate from fault tolerance menu.
Disk duplexing – use 2 drives, each on separate controllers. Disk mirroring use 2 drives on the same controller.
Disk mirroring and duplexing use 2 disks; Volume set use 2~32 disks; disk striping w/o parity use 2 disks.

In striping with parity scenario, if one disk fail, replace it and in Disk Admin, regenerate stripe set, no need to break stripe set first. (but in mirror set it is the case).
If you lose a member of volume set or stripe set, everything is lost.

Backup:

Anyone who has read access can backup files, but to restore, you need Restore File and Directory right. Member of Backup operator, Server Operators, or Admin group can do so.
Anything except registry can be backup remotely. Registry can only be back up locally on each domain controllers.
To backup NT registry successfully, use NT backup program, do not use regedit. In check "backup local registry" box when running NT backup.
To speed up backup, add another backup unit.

Check backup log for NTbackup completion.

NTBackup.exe utility only use tape, not floppy, CDR, or across network.

NT & NetWare

Migrate NW users and groups to NT, need NWLink IPX/SPX compatible transport protocol, and GSNW installed first.
NWLink network has connection problem ?IPX Frame Type incorrect problem

Create gateway to Netware resource
1. Enabling – create user accounts in NTGATEWAY group of NetWare that require access to the NetWare resource.
2. Activating – mapping a network drive to a NetWare resource or adding a printer, depending on whether a resource or print queue is to be accessed.
NWLink IPX/SPX compatible transport protocol and GSNW on NT only get to NetWare 3.12, 4.1, 4.11, which are using Ethernet_802.2 frame types. To connect to NetWare 3.11, which is using Ethernet_802.3 frame type, you should use manual configuration and select both frame types (Auto-detect will only select one frame type).

If frame type other than 802.2 are being used on a network, manual frame type detection must be enabled ?select the manual frame type detection option and add each of the Netware clients’ network numbers and frame types to the frame type configuration list ?you should include all frame types, both old and new one.

Auto detect only find newer version of NetWare (3.12 +), which support only 802.2; 802.3 and 802.5 are used by older version NetWare (3.12 -), won't be detected by NT.

NT clients ?NTSV ?NW server: 1. GSNW in NT server; 2. NTGATEWAY group in NW, in NT, create a group that has permission to NTGATEWAY group. 3. NWLink
NT clients ?NTWS ?NW server: 1. CSNW in NTWS; 2. NW user account; 3. NWLink.
NW clients ?NT server: 1. FPNW services in NT server; 2. NWLink protocol in NT server.

Four Ethernet frame types associated with NWLink IPX/SPX compatible protocol are: Ethernet_802.2; Ethernet_802.3; Ethernet_II; and Ethernet_SNAP.

Files required for the Boot sequence

Boot files – ntldr, boot.ini, ntdetect.com – reside on the system partition; NT OS files – including ntoskrnl.exe – reside on boot partition. BACKWORDS

User & group management

Build in groups, other than admin, that can logon locally are: server operators, account operators, backup operators, and print operators.
If user password expired ?set a future end of date in the account information window in User Manger for Domain.
Account operator can create user account but not assign rights.

NTFS & FAT

Copy files with long file names from NTFS to FAT, file permission won't be copied but long file name will, cause NT support LFN.
Copy files from NTFS to NTFS, file permissions and attributes will be inherited from the destination/target directory.
Move files from NTFS to NTFS, fils permissions and attributes will be copied from the source directory.
Move the file from non compress NTFS to compress NTFS, the file will inherit the compression attribute from the target folder.
3 separate drives, to max paging files, do not place paging files on the same partiton as system, or boot partition, or multiple logical drives, do place paging files on the multiple physical drives.

Compare share permission and NTFS permission and choose the less permissive. No access override anything.

Member server can not be promoted to DC, but in DCs can be promoted and demoted.
Get notified when disk space is less than 15% ?PerfMon, alert view, alert when logical disk (not physical disk) space is under 15%.
Admin domain from win95 PC, to create share ?server manager; to modify NTFS permission or manage network printers, use explorer when using NT admin tools.
To configure max throughput for network application, or for file sharing ?Ctrl-Panel, Network, services, server, properties.

Check hardware compatibility using NTHQ disk:
1. generate disk by running makedisk.bat program from \support\hqtool
2. The disk can handle machine built before 08/96, but not after.

Winnt.exe is 16 bit, only runs on win95; winnt32.exe is 32 bit, runs on NT 3.5x +.
Winsock applications using TCP/IP, on a NetBEUI linked RAS, machine can’t accessing those apps.
NT 4 uses VFAT, not regular FAT. VFAT can not be larger than 4GB.
Upgrade WfW to NT4, run winnt.exe and install NT to c:\windows, this way, NT will convert info from win.ini and system.ini to corresponding registry entries.

Directory replication

Only NT server and Domain can be export server, win95 and NTWS can’t.
Only DCs can be import server, setting server and workstation to import logon script do no good.
Only files in sub directory of export directory (winn\system32\repl\export) will be replicated, not those files under export directory; files won’t be replicated if apps are using them. Application event log shows the error.

Installation Requirement: 124M HD, 16M Ram, 486 DX/100+, VGA, no need CD-ROM

Upgrade NTWS 3.51 to NTSV 4 could only be stand alone server not DC. But it transfer registry, maintain custom program groups, desktop layout, local group and accounts.
During installation, can’t recognize SCSI drive ?wait till finish and add the missing drive from Ctrl-Panel. Other than that, you can replace the drive, or, press S to specify additional devices in "mass storage devices" message.

If network using multiple protocols, to increase network speed, change binding orders in NT workstations only.

A null-modem cable can be used to

Attach a workstation without NIC to a domain.
Test a RAS server locally
Temporarily connect 2 LANs. Attach a workstation to 2 networks that are not physically connected.

You set UPS to send initial warning message 5 seconds after power failure, but on your test, it fail sending messages ?the UPS interface Voltage for the power failure signal is set incorrectly.
Disk administrator is the utility used to restore the system key from floppy, if system registry key contains errors (ExamCram P291) - I don’t think so.

ERD

ERD: fix boot sector corruption; NTLDR missing; corrupt NTOSKRNL file. But do not fix "unable to locate MBR" error.
The file in ERD ?setup.log, lists the files installed dring setup and the checksums of each of these files.

Rdisk /s will save the registry information before create an ERD.

Dumpexam.exe utility is used to view the contents of .dmp file.
Allow paging file to grow past its initial size fragment the disk, and increase the application start time. ?no effect disk I/O and RAM.
If user account is deleted in BDC by mistake, Admin should redo all the job (recreate a new account with the same name and assign it all the permission and rights of the deleted account), whether or not synchronization has occurred.
To get better performance of application on machine that is both application server and print server ?increase the application performance boost to maximum on the server (done from Performance tab of the system properties dialog box) – AT37
Not only DOS, but also WfW machine, need to create network installation setup disk from Network Client Administrator, to do whatever OS/Apps installation.

Paging file

should not be in stripe set with parity ?cause poor performance;
can be place in volume set, stripe set w/o parity, mirror set, but no performance gaining.
Should not be placed in boot partition unless memory dump is enabled.

NTWS with client-based network administration tools, create a new shared directory on a domain server ?explorer.

DHCP

Install DHCP server: assign DNS, WINS address, default gateway, and NetBIOS name resolution type.
After 50% of the lease time has expired, a client machine will attempt to renew its current lease from DHCP server, if DHCP is no longer available, when 87.5% of the lease time has expired, the client will broadcast a request to any DHCP server.
Default directory for NT 3.51 is winnt35.
UPS alerts are administrative alert, set it up by going to server manager, choose server, click alert and add user name and "add".

Auditing

Backup operator by default can backup and restore files when logon locally.

Profile

Three Domain controllers, 25 NT-workstations. Mandatory roaming user profiles. The server where the profile is lying shuts down. What happens to a user who wants to log in to a workstation in the domain the first time ?will not be able to login to domain. Cause it the first time, no cache profile can get locally.
I would like to explain the mandatory profile question that everybody is talking about. If the PDC goes down the users can still logon On because there are two BDC`s in the domain. The question itself explains that you have a domain with one PDC and two BDC’ Anyway, the roaming (.man) profiles that are copied on the PDC are not available , so the users receive the Default Profile. If there is no Default Profile available then the computer try to log you on with the locally cached profile.
